Hawaii

This year my wife and I are celebrating our tenth anniversary. Woot.

We are planning on visiting Hawaii for a week or so later in the year.

Anyone have any recommendations of great places to stay that’ll take really good care of us? That is, we really want to go some place for a week and not lift a single brain cell.

We are currently considering Kona Village Resort on the big island as well as a resort on Kauai.

I stayed in Maui back in the day, and loved it. The best bit about Maui is the variety of climates available on the single small island.

We stayed on night in the Hotel Hana and it was pretty swank. I think it is less of a self-contained resort than other places on the island.

The trip to the top of the volcano on Maui is cool.

Yeah, Maui does seem to be pretty varied. Been living in Kihei for two weeks now. Not very touristy in this corner of the island, but it’s been awesome so far.

    Kauai. Kauai. Kauai.

My wife and I were married 9 (!) years ago on Kaua’i. We basically eloped, and had dinner after the ceremony at the Princeville resort.

We haven’t stayed there - it’s fairly pricey - but if I were looking for a place to spend a 10-year anniversary and be catered to hand and foot, Princeville is where I’d go.

My cousins live on the Big Island, and there are some fantastic resorts up the Kona coast. Any of those will surely do you right. Four Seasons, Hilton, etc.

We’ve been back to the various islands many times since we were married. Love them. If we ever got rich or got good jobs there, I’d move in a heartbeat.

The Big Island’s size and varied climate make it my favorite. It beats out Mau’t by a hair, mostly due to the extra heaping helping of tourist vibe on Mau’i.

Kaua’i is great, too. Smaller population, feels like a small town. Very relaxing. Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali coast are great sites there.

O’ahu is too busy for a nice vacation.

We spent a few days on Moloka’i over New Years. Wouldn’t go back. Nothing to do.

The wife, kid and I spent a week at Turtle Bay up on the North Shore of Oahu in March. We had a great time, and the wild mushroom pizza there was one of the best I’ve ever had. Made CPK look like a joke.

My wife and I have stayed at Kona Village three times in the last six years: twice just the two of us and once with our four year old son. To say we love Kona Village would be an understatement. It is definitely a little idiosyncratic, though. As you probably know, there are no TVs or phones in the hales, nor is the dining really “world class.” Depending on which hale you have, you may also have to do a fair bit of walking to get around the resort. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a stay there. The surroundings are beautiful, the staff is attentive and very friendly without being obsequious, and the whole experience is wonderfully relaxing. Their Friday-night ‘Aha`aina (luau) is great, too.

Elsewhere on the big island, I would recommend Kilauea Lodge or Hale Ohia Cottages in Volcano Village. I have photos (and commentary) from all three of our trips to the big island on our website.

According to the fourth site I found on google, 10 years is the Tin anniversary.

Hawaii’s great and all, but what can show your love better than giving your wife a couple of pounds of solder?

Sheraton Kauai was a lot of fun. It is not quite as isolated as Kona Village, and was near to some good restaurants, and good helicopter flights.

Go to Maui - Wailea area especially - has great weather and sunshine more than 90% of the year. Either the Four Seasons or the Grand Wailea. They’ll both treat you like Kings as long as you let them know it’s your (10th) anniversary. Tell them you work for Apple and you’re a billionaire and they’ll take better care of you ; )
