I'm using the Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D). It is the 8MP generation (the 400D just came out). Now? I would either go with the 400D or a 5D (full sized sensor and a bit more flexibility).

Both Canon and Nikon make great bodies. You certainly won't go wrong with the d50.

It really comes down to lock-in. Canon and Nikon have different lens mounts. So, whatever camera you get now, you'll be buying the same brand as upgrades over many years -- decades, even -- to come. For Canon, that also means generally buying non-EF-S lenses as they are designed for the compact sensor size). The "normal" lenses work fine on lenses with the compact sensor and, even, there are some advantages to the combination.

These are great photos. What kind of camera do you use? I'm thinking of getting my first digital SLR and I've been looking at the Nikon d50 - would you recommend it - or is there something else at that price-point that is a better first digital SLR?
