This is interesting. I run a Weber gas grills site and am immersed in the grill world but never stumbled across this little baby. You have a great writing style and it would be awesome if you could post your thoughts on the Weber Kettle grill. I guess it's the only thing we carry that even compares to this in terms of size. Awesome post by the way, yours is one of the few grills posts I've come across that talks about corn instead of steak or chicken. Oh, and carmelized corn at that? I just got a craving! :-)

This sounds like something I should buy for my husband. I had never heard of the cobb - I was thinking you were talking about corn on the cob. It's getting close to Christmas, I'll go take a look. Thanks.

Charles -- my comment wasn't meant to downplay the Weber. It does look like an awesome little grill. More to point out the differences. The weber is a grill and a very good one, from the looks of it and the online reviews. Of course, with Weber and several other like minded companies, good reviews of an unchanged product means they have to kill it for something "better" that is actually much worse. Sigh.

If I had room for one, I'd pick it up. The cooking area is significantly larger and, thus, doing a boatload of dogs or burgers on it would be possible, as it is not with the Cobb (I could do -- maybe -- 6, definitely 5 burgers on the Cobb).

Oh well I realized I should clarify, the little Weber doesn't hold just 9 briquets, that's all I use when grilling something just for myself, like one hamburger, and I love how stingy it is with fuel. I use this grill a lot at pot lucks, I usually cook a big flank steak over a charge of about 25 briquets. Sometimes I make yakisoba in two frying pans over the grill. And when I snuff it out, it's cool enough 20 minutes later, I can toss it back into my car trunk. But I usually cook just for myself and this is about the most convenient and economical way to grill one serving.
I do note that one of the distinctive features of all Weber grills is that they're intended to be used with the cover on, so controlled airflow through the vents will prevent flareups. Same principle as the Cobb.
Anyway, don't mean to hijack your Cobb review, but I don't think the little Weber is much of a threat to their market since that Weber model appears to be End Of Life'd. I've had mine for about 20 years. Everyone who sees mine, wants one. So I just recommend it and tell everyone this might be your last chance to get one.

Nice grill! But it is a grill, not an oven. The more I use the Cobb, the more I realize that it is really a charcoal fired oven. For example, the Cobb's design makes it impossible for flare up to occur because of fat dripping on the coals -- much more like the even heat of an oven.

I do wish it had adjustable vents. I wouldn't have saved that much charcoal, but.. still... I am a cheap bastard at heart.

However, if I were in the market for a portable grill, I would pick up the Weber in a heart beat. Looks quite handy.

I personally would recommend an alternate product, the Weber Charcoal Go-Anywhere Grill. It's cheaper than the Cobb (I got mine free for clipping coupons) and has most of the features the Cobb has, although not so elaborately designed. It's extremely efficient, you can shut all the vents to snuff it instantly and reuse most of the charcoal, I once got 3 grillings out of one load of charcoal (only about 9 briquets). The vents work great for modulating the fire intensity, and it works well at indirect heat and has accessories like water pans for moist heat or smoking. Also most grill foods fit better on this Weber rectangular grill than a small round grill like the Cobb.
Unfortunately it might be hard to find, Weber doesn't list it on their website, only the horrid gas version. But you can still find them at Amazon for $45.
